Our Services: Holter Monitor

This is a continuous ECG recording over a 24-hour period as you go about your daily living. Your doctor usually orders a Holter monitor to see if there is any heart rhythm problems causing symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, fainting, or chest discomfort. It may also be ordered to see if your heart medication for rhythm problems is working properly.

The Holter monitor is a small box the size of a Walkman or transistor radio, which has five small cables attached to electrode patches that are placed on your chest. The monitor is carried in a holder around the neck or waist. The information is transferred from the electrode patches to a digital card in the Holter monitor.

You will be able to undertake your normal activities except you will not be able to take a bath, shower, or get your chest area wet during the 24-hour test. Therefore we suggest you have a shower before you come in. You have to come back the following day to have the Holter removed.

The information will be downloaded to a computer and analysed. The report is subsequently sent to your doctor.
