Clincal Professor Rukshen Weerasooriya - Cardiologist
Dr Rukshen Weerasooriya graduated from UWA in 1994. Rukshen trained in all aspects of general cardiology at Royal Perth Hospital before undertaking subspeciality cardiac electrophysiology training at the world’s leading unit in Bordeaux, France. Rukshen has a particular interest in the invasive management of atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is extremely common, affecting 1-2% of the population and the management of atrial fibrillation has recently been revolutionised by the use of percutaneous catheter ablation procedures. This treatment was discovered and developed by the Bordeaux team in the early 1990’s and has rapidly moved from experimental to widespread clinical use. Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation is a very attractive alternative to life-long drug treatment for a large proportion of patients with atrial fibrillation. Catheter ablation can render the patient free of atrial fibrillation without the need for drugs.

The main advantage is a markedly improved quality of life and the treatment is worth considering for any patient with impaired quality of life as a consequence of AF itself or the drug treatment. It has been clearly demonstrated that the procedure is safe and effective when undertaken by a high volume, specifically trained operator. Rukshen has developed an atrial fibrillation management service and is delighted to accept direct referrals for assistance in the investigation and management of your atrial fibrillation patients as well as those patients with other suspected cardiac rhythm abnormalities (eg syncope and palpitation). The AF service is comprehensive and includes assessment of anticoagulation requirements, rate versus rhythm control, and management of frequently associated problems such as sleep apnea and hypertension. Rukshen operates at Hollywood Private Hospital with a dedicated team including cardiac technicians, physician assistants, and anaesthetists.
